CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Misty Miller submitted this report. Misty Miller and April Flannery are planning the Christmas program, which is December 13, 2009 at 11:00 AM. A soup and sandwich lunch (free will offering) will be served by the Senior High youth group. A collection will be taken for the Children’s Inn (final donations) or people may bring non-perishable food items for the McCook County food pantry. WORSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP: Confirmation Bibles need to be ordered. Sandy Giegling submitted this report. The committee discussed questions that have come up about adding a second service in the future. Topics discussed were how this would affect Sunday School, Treasury (counting money), praise band and splitting up the congregation. Also discussed were having a Sat. night service and a Sun. morning service. This would take care of the Sunday School and Treasury issues. The committee feels that having two services would split up the congregation, but in order for our church to grow, it is an option that should be explored. The committee proposes to the council that we explore and promote the possibility of having two Sunday morning services on the last Sunday in January. One service would be at 9:30 and one at 11:00. Pastor John would do the sermon for both. The committee also proposes to the council that during Lent the church has two services; one on Saturday night and one Sunday morning. Pastor John would also do the sermon for both services. The Saturday service would be at 7:00 PM. There would be no Wednesday night services this year. That would alleviate any problems with pioneer club and youth group. The Worship and Membership Committee will start promoting both of these changes as soon as the Council approves this. The committee has a handout to review from Pastor John. It is titled “Hospitality Ministry” and deals with, as a church, how we handle new people and visitors. It deals mainly with greeters and ushers. Pastor John was also going to pass this along to the elders since they line up the greeters. The committee is going to review it and have discussion at the next committee meeting. Sandy Giegling made a motion to have a 7:00 PM Saturday service in addition to the Sunday morning service to provide more opportunities for worship for families. The Saturday night service would begin January 9, 2010 through February 13, 2010, and then be evaluated. Misty Miller seconded the motion, the Council VOTED and the motion carried. Names were submitted to the Lay Leadership committee for their consideration. Committee members present on November 17 were Gerry Beck, Lori Shumaker, Gayle Janzen, Carol Woltzen, and Pastor John. The Pastor evaluation was completed and will be shared with Pastor John on November 30 or December 1, 2009. The Christmas Program is set for Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 11am. We need to confirm that the youth mission group will be serving a free will offering soup/sandwich lunch after the program. If they don’t want to we will open it up to other groups or may just turn it into a potluck. The Christmas program will be a variety program and will include Jr. and Sr. High classes as well open to puppets, adult bells, piano students, anyone that wants to participate is welcome. The elementary students will continue with the Children’s Inn mission project through December 6, 2009. The Elders continue to greet weekly and participate in communion and baptisms.
MINISTRIES COORDINATOR REPORT: Starlyn Church reported that she made 11 visits, 3 hospital visits, and led the Bible study at Good Sam. The group began the study of Genesis. Because Prayers and Squares have quilts in the closet, some of them have begun making quilts for Project Linus. Project Linus gives a quilt to every child, age 0-18, who is in the hospital. The ladies from our church attended Women of Faith on October 16- 17, 2009. There were 2 tickets that didn't get sold and 4 bus rides that didn't get paid for, so our church will have to cover that. I will be implementing a policy next year that if you buy a ticket and back out, you still have to pay for the bus ride if that was to be your form of transportation. Starlyn spoke to Erv and Arleen Ortman's Sunday School class that came and ate our turkey supper. I explained the ministries of Prayers and Squares, the soldiers' quilts and Pioneer Club. They took up a collection and donated $32 to Pioneer Club. The Pioneer Club Fall Family party is October 28, 2009. The Pioneer Club will be watching a Veggie Tales movie on self-esteem. Devotions will be on pumpkins and the pumpkin prayer. Lunch will be caramel apples, nuts/M & M's/candy corn and apple cider. The apples were donated by Homestead Orchard. Pioneer Club has taken in around $2700 and has spent about $3700 (this includes the fall party and Christmas ornaments). CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Misty Miller submitted this report. Sunday School began on Sunday, September 13, 2009. Bibles were handed out to three 3rd graders: Jayden Flannery, Noelle Hofer and Christina Tieszen. Teachers have noticed an increase in the number of children attending Sunday School so far this year. The 1st-3rd grade classes could use 2 helpers instead of just one. There are still many Sundays open if someone wants to help or teach in any of the classes throughout the rest of the year. Several members on our committee did make “in your face” asks and got many “no” answers when asked people to teach. Many positive comments from parents, church members and teachers regarding the change of time for the elementary Sunday School. So far...so good. We will NOT be serving a snack during or after Sunday School. The kids may go through the regular line and get juice or a snack if there is one during fellowship time. We didn’t think this was necessary as many kids are going home to have lunch right after Sunday school. CE met on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. Discussion was held on the material being used in Jr. and Sr. High Youth Groups. Misty also met with PPR and PJ on Thursday to discuss the issues regarding Youth Groups. The consensus was that Jr./Sr. High Youth Group is meant to bring Christian kids together in a safe environment and show them that you don’t need drugs/alcohol to have a good time. It was also felt that this is a time for the kids to have a break or escape from a “lesson” based gathering as this is what Sunday School is for. Have the games and a brief (5-10) reflection on a devotional or world issue or something going on in town or at school. Getting away from a “lesson” solves the problem of material. Whatever is used for Youth Group gatherings needs to be reviewed and approved by the CE committee Co-Chairs prior to being used, as youth group falls under the CE umbrella. Also a calendar of events/discussion items needs to be sent/mailed out a month ahead of time to the kids/families participating in youth groups. As well as it has been recommended to do at least one activity a month outside of church like bowling, corn maze…etc. It was suggested to get input from the kids as to what they want to do for activities. The Christmas Program is set for Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 11am. We will be asking if the youth mission group would like to serve a free will offering soup/sandwich lunch after the program. If they don’t want to we will open it up to other groups or may just turn it into a potluck. The Christmas program will be a variety program and will include Jr. and Sr. High classes as well open to puppets, adult bells, piano students, anyone that wants to participate is welcome. Sr. High has developed their own mission projects and will present them in church sometime in October. The elementary students will continue with the Children’s Inn mission project. This project was initiated with VBS this summer. Various items will be collected or money will be collected and used to purchase items for the kids at Children’s Inn. A note went home the first week of Sunday school with most of the kids (at least one per family). WORSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP: Sandy Giegling reported the Worship and Membership Committee met on September 15, 2009 with Pastor John. The committee discussed the Joys and Concerns prayer time of the worship service and decided to keep doing prayer time as we are now and have a silent prayer time before the pastoral prayer. The committee discussed ways to welcome visitors to our worship service. There has been feedback that the congregation does not interact enough with new people attending our worship services. Monte Fuhrman is coordinating home visits for people moving into the Canistota area. Pastor John and Monte are going to contact church members about greeting visitors coming in and inviting them to coffee after the service. They have some people in mind that would be very good at this type of thing. If you would like to be involved in this or know someone who you would recommend, please talk to Pastor John or someone on Worship and Membership. As a church we should all be aware of new people and greet them, ask them if they are visiting or new to the area, and make them feel welcome. Monte Fuhrman made a motion and Pastor John seconded the motion to consider having two services each week. Motion Carried. The committee received feedback that a lot of people would like to hear more from the praise band. also feels our congregation is big enough to support two services. Worship and Membership is going to promote this for the next 6 months to see what kind of feedback we get from the congregation. There will be two services on January 24, 2010, to try out this concept and see how it goes. On January 24, 2010 there will be one service at 9:30 am and one at 11:00 am. The 9:30 am service will be a traditional service and the 11:00 am service will be more contemporary with the praise band. The praise band songs will be printed as an insert in the bulletin for those who cannot see or do not want to stand during the songs. Pastor John will be gone on October 25, 2009 and November 1, 2009. Kelsie Nebelsick will speak on October 25,2009 and the people who went on the mission trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in June 2009 will give the message on November 1, 2009. Heidi Church transferred her church membership to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa on September 28, 2009. Peggy Parry requests that her name be moved from the inactive church member list to the active church member list on September 28, 2009. PASTORAL RELATIONS: Carol Woltzen submitted this report. The PPR committee met on September 24, 2009 with the following members present: Gayle Janzen, Lori Shumaker, Bill Cavill, Gerry Beck, Carol Woltzen and Pastor John. Jeff Nielsen was absent. Misty Miller met with the committee to discuss the Jr. and Sr. High Youth fellowship program. Misty gave recommendations from the Christian Education committee and the PPR committee concurred. These recommendations are: 1) Any material being presented to the Jr. and Sr. High Youth group should be approved by the Christian Ed. Committee prior to be used; 2) Jr. and Sr. High youth group should be a time of Christian fellowship--making the youth feel welcome and comfortable in a Christian setting, building a relationship with the pastor and other Christian adults. Planned activities should be scheduled in advance and parents given notice through a monthly calendar. 3) Devotions should be based on topics that are current and applicable to the age group and 10-15 minutes in length. We all agreed that the youth enjoy the games and activities Pastor John has planned. The PPR committee thanks the Christian Education committee for their guidance and recommendations. The committee also discussed Pastor John's request for vacation and continuing education. Those requests should be approved by the PPR committee before being brought to council.
